Do files vanish when program is uninstalled?

I uninstalled "Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10", and then after uninstalling it I began to wonder whether or not files (i.e. photos) were uninstalled/erased along with the program. When a program is uninstalled, do the files (i.e. photos) remain somewhere on the computer?
